What to try

This is a working copy of an app built for one Indian family: it keeps track of the rent from the spaces they let out, and of what the household spends day to day.

Everything you see is invented: six tenants, named after the space they rent, and two years of shopping, bills and wages. It is rebuilt every night so the newest entries are always from today, and anything you change here is undone by morning. Press whatever you like.

The two PINs

Nothing in the app has a login. Two shared PINs guard it instead: the family PIN shows the details (tenants' phone numbers, what each thing cost), and the admin PIN allows changes (marking rent paid, editing the catalogue). The admin PIN opens everything the family PIN does. In the real app only the family knows them; here they are printed at the top of every page.

Start here

Two parts of the app are built: Tenants (rent) and Expenses (the household). The other tiles are planned, not built.

  1. A list of things to try on each screen, with links straight to them.

  2. This month's rent, who has paid, and who to remind.

  3. What to buy next, which payments are coming up, and where the money went.

Rent this month

Rent for a month is paid in the first week of the next one, so this month's mostly shows as not yet due. Pick last month with the month arrows to see who paid and when.

  1. The note near the top counts rent current tenants owe from other months. Flat 1B never paid one from three months back.

  2. Press Mark as Paid on anyone unpaid. It asks for the day the money actually arrived, because that, not the day you press the button, decides on time or late.

  3. Message on WhatsApp writes each unpaid tenant's reminder in Hindi, ready to send. On the demo, WhatsApp asks you who to send it to, since these tenants are invented.

Rent insights

Collection month by month, each tenant's habits, deposits, and what needs attention. Tap a month's column to open that month.

  1. Needs a lookFamily PIN

Flat 1A paid on time for years and has been late for the last few months, so it is flagged. The Tailoring shop has always paid late, and deliberately is not: a habit is not news. Flat 1B's unpaid month has a Remind button.

  2. A row of marks per tenant, one a month: on time, late or unpaid. The Rooftop room moved in recently; its first increase is already scheduled for the anniversary.

  3. DepositsFamily PIN

The Garage workshop moved out owing its last two months. The deposit covers it, so it is shown apart from money still to chase.

Expenses

Three tabs. Need again works out from past purchases what is about to run out and which payments are due. Spending shows where the money went and checks for gaps. Quantities tracks how much of each thing the household uses.

  1. Need again groups what is due by shop, with a rough cost. Log this trip opens an entry with the list filled in, ready for prices.

  2. The cook and the maid are both paid on the 1st, so they show as one round with Pay all.

  3. Bread has not been bought for a few weeks, so it is listed as not bought for a while. Open it and press Stopped buying this to take it off the list.

  4. On Spending: Yoga class is paid every month but not logged in this one (Log it), Tamatar has got dearer, and there is a run of days with nothing logged (Log a slip for these days). If this month is too new to show them, pick last month.

  5. Also on Spending: “Dhania” was typed by hand where the catalogue has “Dhaniya” (Link…), “Phenyl” keeps being typed in (Add), and some rows are still filed under “Laundry”, a category that was deleted (Fix…).

  6. On Quantities: Paneer was logged in grams for a while, then in kilos, so it cannot be added up. Convert to kg rewrites the old rows, showing every change first.

Logging spending

Entry follows the paper: a shopping slip is one date and one way of paying, with many lines. Anyone can log without a PIN.

  1. Press + and add lines. The item picker opens on what the household buys most, and choosing an item jumps straight to its amount.

  2. The camera button reads a handwritten or printed list into lines you check before saving; the totals check flags a line it missed. Any shopping list or receipt will do. On the demo each visitor gets a few reads an hour, and photos go to Google's Gemini free tier, which may use them to improve its models — so don't send anything private.

Settings

The categories and items the picker offers. A category's kind decides how Need again treats it: things that run out, regular payments, or occasional spending left off the list.

  1. Newspaper was cancelled months ago and switched off: its history stays, but it is gone from the picker and Need again.
